Joyful Work

We spend most of our adult lives on working. Taking into account commuting time, overtime, thinking about our jobs, worrying about work, we spend more of our waking time on work than on anything else.

Work is conventionally defined in economic terms – what people do for financial return in order to earn a living. But this definition obscures its richer psychological meaning.

What happens when people enjoy what they do at work? They are
productive, proactive, self-motivated, conscientious, collaborative,
and they bring positive energy to people around them. Many of us have had such experiences and when we do, we feel like valuable individuals at the end of a meaningful day.

But the working world is also full of challenges. Changes are constant. Uncertainty is more commonplace.Expectations keep rising. Competition keeps intensifying. In parallel there are challenges and expectations in our personal worlds as well. As a result, we often time feel stressed, frustrated, confused, and even victimized. Overtime, negative emotions affect our thoughts, judgments, relationships, productivity, and even our physical health.

Everyone of us, no matter whether we are a bus driver, a school teacher, an office assistant, a health professional, a manager, a leader, or a chief executive officer, we have the opportunity to find true joy and meaning at our work. We can make our ordinary work extraordinary. What does it take to achieve this? It takes the right beliefs, mindset, attitude, and determined efforts to keep doing what you believe is right, to learn and grow from your experiences, and to bring value and meaning to your colleagues, customers and shareholders.

First become a positive being, then produce positive work. We have developed the program Finding Joy and Meaning at Work which incorporates key principles of positive psychology as well as research findings on what contributes to a positive working attitude, more effective work performance, more creativity, and a sense of fulfillment.

Employees at all levels can benefit from this program, especially those who are motivated to learn and to grow, those who are going through the challenge of changes, and those who want to learn how to deal with pressure, and to find more growth and meaning at work.
